Glasgow School Of Sport

The first school dedicated to sporting excellence was set up in 1999 and is funded by the Scottish government. It is situated at Bellahouston Academy being the first in Glasgow and the only school in Great Britain to help up and coming sports stars to become better at their chosen sport.
The pupils follow a balanced curriculum including English and Maths but receive coaching within the school day. The pupils will receive specialist coaching from coaches who have competed and/or coached at national level in their sport and who are qualified with top coaching awards.
The School of Sport has 5 main specialisms ; athletics, badminton, gymnastics, hockey and swimming. Applications to become part of the School of Sport are accepted from any pupil throughout Scotland. Over 60 pupils from the School of Sport have represented Scotland with many competing in the Commonwealth Games.  The School provides pupils to not only focus on the important aspects but it lets them concentrate on becoming a better athlete and improving on the things they are most interested in.

Scottish Golf Show

     The Scottish Golf Show is the UK's biggest golf show and it will be held in the SECC, Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre, Glasgow for 8th-10th of April for the 6th year running. It is an event that no serious golfer should miss, whether they are male, female, junior or senior the Scottish golf show has something for every type of golfer. It will feature one of Scotland's largest retail golf shops, stands from over 100 top exhibitors, short game and putting practice areas, free lessons from professional golfers and many more. The stands will be from exhibitors such as PGA Scotland, Ping, Callaway Golf, Scottish Golf Union and over 90 more.


     The tickets are priced at £10.00 which is not expensive at all, it is a reasonable price for golfers who are very serious about their sport. The tickets are available at ticketsoup online

Race For Life

Tesco hold a very famous running event called the Race For Life. They run this to raise money for Cancer Research UK. It is an event solely for woman's participation and it is held in many different locations. It will be held in Glasgow Green on Sunday 5th Of June this year and is available for any female to take part. Participants have the option to walk, jog or run the course and it is also suitable for wheelchair users with assistance. The main purpose of the event is to raise money to help beat cancer. Participants receive a welcome pack for the event including a back sign which they can use to illustrate the reason they are taking part. This can be very emotional as their are all different circumstances written on the signs. Participants will also receive a running number which they have to wear on the day. Other than that, the girls can dress as they please, many people decide to dress up on the day as this is a way to raise more money for Cancer Research UK.

Women's 10k

Glasgow hosts a very popular women's 10k every year. The race will take place this year on Sunday 8th of May at 10am and is available for all abilities. The race will start from Bellahouston Park and costs £20 to enter. The deadline for entering this years race is Friday 23rd of April in order for the race packs to be sent out to participants in time. Many of the woman who run will raise money for their chosen charity. Breast Cancer Care is a major charity that a lot of the woman raise money for by running the 10k. By raising money for Breast Cancer Care they provide the runner with many things such as a running vest to run with on the day and to keep, a fundraising pack to help them raise money and newsletters which provide advice for participants. The race can be seen as a fun way of raising money as the women have to opportunity to take part in fancy dress.

Bank Of Scotland Great Scottish Run

The Bank Of Scotland hold the Great Scottish run which consists of a half marathon and a 10k. It is Scotlands largest mass participation sporting event and it is held in the Glasgow area starting off at George Square and finishing at Glasgow Green. The race will take place on Sunday 4th of September. Entrants have the opportunity to enter the race at last years price if they register before 24th of June 2011. The ticket price will be £20 for the 10k and £25 for the half marathon if entrants decide to enter online before the 24th of June. Entrants can decide to walk or run the race but should be prepared as it can be quite challenging.

The Great Scottish Run has been shortlisted for the prestigious Sport Industry Award "Sport Participation Event Of The Year" as in 2010 it attracted a record breaking 23,386 participants.

School Sport Week

School sport week is Scotland's biggest celebration of school sport which is ran by Bank of Scotland in partnership with sportscotland. Scotstoun leisure centre was the location for the event with the main aim of finding a future paralympian champion. In total there was 735 schools and over 175,000 who took part last year with 13 schools from the Glasgow area.
Pictured to the left is Simon Jackson, three time paralympic gold medalist in Judo. Simon helped with the promotion of the school sport week by introducing disabled youngters to new sports.

Gymnastics World Cup

Glasgow has held many different successful Gymnastics events in the past however this year they will host the first ever Gymnastics World Cup in the UK at Kelvinhall International Sports Arena. Glasgow will also host the event next year. It will join Stuttgart in Germany; Jacksonville in America and Tokyo in Japan in staging the events of the world cup. The worlds top 8 male and female gymnasts will be participating in the event with the men's competition involving floor exercise, vault, parallel bar and more and the women's competition will involve vault, balance beam, uneven bar and more.



 EventScotland will provide funding through its International Events Programme for the next two years.

Commonwealth Games 2014

Glasgow will host the 2014 Commonwealth Games, they were chosen over Edinburgh to be the host city in 2014.  The games will run over 11 days from 23rd July until 3rd August with at least 4500 athletes participating. It will be the biggest multi-sport event Glasgow has ever held as the previous two commonwealth games held by Scotland in 1970 and 1986 were held in Edinburgh. As Glasgow are hosting the 2014 Commonwealth Games, it is a great opportunity for Sport to be promoted in a positive sense. It will make the population more aware that Sport can be pursued as a professional career.


 
The games will be held in many different venue such as Celtic Park, Glasgow Green Hockey Centre, Kelvin Hall, Kelvingrove Bowling Centre, Strathclyde Country Park and many more. The vast majority of venues are located within 20-minutes driving time of the Athletes Village in Dalmarnock and are broadly grouped into three clusters; in the East End, South Side and West End districts of the city. The only sports held outside the Greater Glasgow area will be the Diving and Full-Bore Shooting events.

Football in Glasgow

Glasgow has three famous football stadiums that are well known worldwide.



 The new national stadium at Hampden ;
  •  It was opened in 1903 and renovated in 1999
  • It has a capacity of 52,103
  • It is the home ground of Queen's Park
  • It holds Scottish Cup finals 
  • It will play a part in 2014 Commonwealth Games by holding the Closing ceremony and some of the events.


Celtic Park also known as Parkhead or even "paradise" by fans is the home ground of Celtic Football Club.
  •  It was opened in 1892 and renovated in 1998.
  • It has a capacity of 60,832
  • Located in the Parkhead area of Glasgow
  • It is the 6th largest stadium in the United Kingdom
  • It will hold the opening ceremony of 2014 Commonwealth Games
Ibrox Stadium is the home ground of Rangers Football Club.
  • It was opened in 1899 and has had many renovations since :

    1991, Main Stand (third tier)
  • It is located on the south side of the River Clyde.
  • It has a capacity of 51,082
  • It is the 10th largest stadium in the United Kingdom
